Back Pain

Treating backpain with Orthokine

Various factors play a role in the origin of back pain. Age-related changes in the spinal column, slipped discs or bony narrowing of the spinal canal are possible causes. However, the effect of this “mechanical problem” is often the same: the nerve roots are irritated or inflamed. This can lead to pain and loss of sensation (numbness of the legs, etc.).

The release of so-called cytokines is responsible for these complaints. Cytokines are signalling factors of the immune system that contribute to the onset of pain and nerve damage. The cytokine interleukin-1 plays an important role in the inflammatory process. Interleukin-1 is responsible for inflammation, while its antagonist, interleukin-1-receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), is anti-inflammatory and pain-inhibiting. For this reason, this substance is suitable for the treatment of compressed and inflamed nerves.

During the Orthokine procedure, IL-1Ra is produced in the blood sample taken from an individual patient. It is then injected into the vicinity of the relevant nerve root by computer tomography guided techniques. Various patient observations and a scientific clinical study at the Bochum University Clinic have demonstrated the extraordinary effectiveness and safety of the procedure.

The three stages of the Orthokine procedure:

  1. Blood withdrawal with the Orthokine syringe
  2. Preparation and production of serum containing IL-1Ra in the laboratory
  3. Injection of the active substance into the vicinity of the nerve root
