Investigating biological mechanisms of muscular-skeletal diseases

Our Center for Molecular Orthopaedics is characterised by intensive research in the area of Molecular Medicine as well as for conservative and surgical orthopaedics over many years. The result has been about 90 medical publications in the leading international and national specialist journals such as “Arthroscopy”, “Spine” or “Gene Therapy”.

Since the early 80s we have dedicated ourselves to pain and inflammation research in degenerative joint and in spine diseases. In doing so, we have investigated the basic mechanisms of disease allowing us to develop new therapy modalities. A further research area is the treatment of damaged cartilage with the body’s own cartilage transplant.

Moving on from Biotechnology our interdisciplinary team developed a number of gene therapy treatments and conducted the first real clinical gene therapy trial in rheumatoid arthritis in the world. A further main focal point in research is the potential of growth factors. The consolidated findings have clinical applications in the regeneration of bones and for the acceleration of fracture healing.
