Cartilage Regeneration

The cartilage acts as a natural shock absorber in the joint. If the cartilage is damaged by sports injuries, obesity or excessive wear, the result is arthritis. Repairing cartilage damage using the body’s own cartilage transplants provides the wherewithal to prevent further joint degradation. The Molecular Orthopaedics Center’s practice and clinic for orthopedics and neurosurgery now has over 6 years of clinical experience with autologous (body) cartilage implants.

Autologous Chondrozytentransplantation (ACT)

The so-called car boxes Chondrozytentransplantation (ACT), the patient healthy cartilage cells removed. In a pharmaceutical laboratory will be increased and a fleece. This will create a three-dimensional cartilage cushions, in a second surgery to fit into the cartilage defect is used. By Autologous Chondrozytransplantation defined can be raised to 10 cm2 large cartilage defects treated.

The cartilage cells will be implemented over a period from four to six weeks in a biotechnology lab, and then raised to a fleece. The production is subject to continuous quality controls.

Cartilage-bone transplant

With the so-called arthroskopischen cartilage-bone transplants are in younger patients 55 years to good success. These are healthy and less polluted lots joint cartilage cells removed in order to rebuild the defect. However, this method of cartilage damage was not greater than two square centimeters. In addition, osteoarthritis may not yet available. The investigations show in general good results: The abrasion resistance of the transplanted cartilage is only about ten percent lower than in healthy articular cartilage.

Support of the cartilage regeneration

In cartilage transplants, we recommend After treatment with the body’s protein interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1Ra). To support the healing process and hardening of the Knorpeltransplantats also growth factors are used.

Resilience of the joint

Following an intervention should gelenkchirurgischen the joint around eight weeks only partially charged. Light sports like swimming or cycling, after about four months time. Overall, the healing process of cartilage takes about a year.
